  1. Hi Dick,

Sorry about the delay answering - busy time for me.

First - a correction "Cone 10 bodies were affected when the low P2O3 Custer started shipping around 2000"  should read K2O not P2O3. How could that change have happened?

I don't have any custer - in fact I'm retiring from making pots. Just can't physically handle the work anymore.  Still fixing glazes though.

I would still like to do the reaserch on the current Custer.

If the KNaO is back up to 14% as opposed to 10% for the low K2O I assume any glazes that would run off must have a lot of custer? Or does it have low alumina or both?

    RR

Ron, I've been away for a few days for our Thanksgiving holiday and not able to respond. Based on the latest info that Pacer is shut down for an indeterminate time, I think we should wait to see the condition of whatever they come up with when they reopen rather than analyze old product that is not currently available.

  2. It's official, and medical mystery solved.  I have Addison's disease.  So an end to 30 years of declining functioning and having my issues foisted off on alleged "mental problems".  Too late to rescue any of my multiple careers - but at least I still have enough life left, and now the energy, to spend lotsa time playing in the mud!

It's sad how many medical conditions get written off as "mental problems" rather than diagnosing and treating the physical malfunction. Glad you now have it under control.

  3. Starting to read thru the gerstley borate substitute items on the forum.  Has anyone tried Tom Buck's dry mix substitute?  Or do you think its less problematic to just go with Gillespie Borate?

Back in the day, one issue with Gerstley was its variable chemical content. Natural materials are always variable over time , depending on what part of mine it came from, etc., but Gerstley was variable from batch to batch, and some even gave it the nickname Ghastley Borate. When Laguna bought the whole mineyard (but not the mine, nothing new coming out of the ground anymore), they processed it all at once and thoroughly mixed it all. So now the many years worth stock in the warehouse is all pretty much the same. But also slightly different than what it was 20 years ago. The published analysis of the current stock compared to ~1999 show somewhat less silica than before, but other fluxes are about the same +/-. So get some Gerstley and make a test batch of your glaze recipe to see if it needs any tweaking.
