ellen currans showed me how to add detail with a handle having the same texture as the center of the platter. it worked very well here, thank you ellen!! you can see the results of uneven spraying in the sort of wavy dark and light spots on the outer rim. too wet.

thank you all. yes, babs, i wanted a transparent green that would enhance texture, not cover it up.  took this to Alexandria Va show over the weekend.  sold other things but not this one.  it is thin by stoneware standards but similar in thickness to commercially made platters.  many people said they liked the work shown, first sale was the tree in a square.  it is nice to hear after all the work to get to here.
