Gabby 275 Posted July 31, 2018 Report Share Do you use molds or templates for hand building? What are the dimensions? Quote Link to comment
yappystudent 272 Posted August 1, 2018 Report Share TY for asking -these are all pinch pots but for bigger vessels I use plastic bowls as slump molds. The biggest green dish at the bottom is exactly 5 inches across, I used the bottom half of a fancy bottle to partly form it around and give it some pattern, then pinched out the edge. The top right and top were both stamped. The fish on the left was wax resist over black underglaze with a gray overglaze, wish it was that nice on the outside. Quote Link to comment
oldlady 3,617 Posted August 1, 2018 Report Share yappy, if you use some sand for weight in the fancy bottle you can press it into the clay over some deep foam rubber. i still have a big piece from a sofa cushion someone put out for trash 10/12 years ago. if you have already cut the bottle that won't work well due to the brittleness of plastic bottles. yappystudent 272 Posted August 2, 2018 Report Share @oldlady, I have some foam around somewhere. I take it the weight of the sand does part of the work and you use a slab first? Doesn't it get stretched too thin in places? I'll have to give it a try. I used a decorative glass bottle but seems like it would work the same. Quote Link to comment
oldlady 3,617 Posted August 2, 2018 Report Share yes, a slab big enough for the bottle to press into the foam. the sand gives it some structure if it is a thin plastic bottle that would otherwise deform when pressed. stretching does not hurt the slab. my flat boards have sharpish 90 degree angles and only one in hundreds actually creases into a split at a corner. look at my personal gallery.
