A good number of pots I don't sell wind up in our kitchen and I've noticed that they seem to chip relatively easily, especially compared to the brown mid-range clay I also use. Has anyone else noticed this? Would it be sturdier if I fired it at cone 6 instead of 5? I do tend to throw work that is a bit on the thin side, but it is not paper thin by any means. Mark C. Posted June 8, 2013 Report Share Posted June 8, 2013 B-mix is white stoneware in the cone 10 version.Not sure about mid-range version. Many here believe cone 5/6 is the strongest range around so I'm bit confuzed as to why its not holding up in daily use. Lets see what some mid range experts say. OffCenter Posted June 8, 2013 Report Share Posted June 8, 2013 The box says 5 but it should be fired to 6. Depending on the glazes I fire it to flat 6 or flat 7 (meaning that 8 is bending). I also woodfire cone 10 B-mix and B-mix woodfire to cone 10-13. Neither seem any more prone to chipping than any other clay I've used and seem equally strong. I haven't done a MOR test so don't know if there is some minor difference in strength between B-Mix 6 and B-Mix 10, but if I ever find out that B-Mix 10 is a bit stronger than B-Mix 6 I will not let Mark know.
