Cone 6 is not melting amaco glazes in kiln.

Recommended Posts

We have a skutt kiln in our art studio.  I am changing the thermocouple out today and am relatively new to kiln work.  Our amaco glazes fired at cone 6 at a medium firing isn't allowing our glazes to completely melt.  Should I try cone 5 glaze firing on slow mode to help the glazes mature better?

I have been using some Amaco glazes lately that say Cone 5 or to cone 6. I'm getting good maturity at cone 5 with a slow cool ( just to 1950F ). cone 6 is fine with no hold at all but got a few pin holes possibly from only bisque to 06 instead of 04 ( I'm bisque firing to 04 now with a 10 min hold on VERY densely stacked loads.

My pyrometer is the old metal kind and is still very accurate, I have mostly stopped using cones and look at the heat work via math rather than cones. Its just a ratio anyway. if you can get the relationship of how heat work is a function the cones don't matter.
