flowerdry Posted April 14, 2017 Report Share Posted April 14, 2017 I am trying to figure out what is going on with the Rk2 at the community studio where I teach. It vibrates enough that it makes your whole leg feel weird if you leave your foot on the pedal. Wheel head runs true and does not vibrate. I disconnected the cone from the ring plate (what a weird set up!) and the motor does still vibrate just slightly. I had one very handy electrician take a look and he said check the bushings in the motor. (Turns out there are no bushings in the motor.) Someone who knows a lot about wheels told me it had to be the bearings based on my description of the problem. He recommended a shop where he has taken wheels. I took the wheel there and they charged me $80.00 to check out the motor and tell me it wasn't the problem, and now I still have a wheel that vibrates. The belt and the ring plate appear to be ok, but I guess I'll try replacing them. Before I spend more money, has anyone out there seen this problem or have any suggestions? Mark C. Posted April 14, 2017 Report Share Posted April 14, 2017 You must pinpoint where the vibration is coming from-if the motor is causing it does the cone drive amplify it?? Best to turn it on its side and operate and see whats going on. You also can call shimpo and talk to a Teck-this may be the best time spent on this. Everything stopped vibrating when I disconnected the motor from it's load, except a very slight vibration in the motor. Guest Posted April 16, 2017 Report Share Posted April 16, 2017 Remove the belt and run the motor, does it still vibrate? If not, take a closer look at the v-belt. Bend the belt, it should have some flex to it. If it is somewhat stiff or there are cracks present replace the belt. The wheel head should spin freely now without the belt connected. Is it spinning smoothly and quietly? Is there a rumbling noise when the belt is connected and the wheel head is spinning? If so, check to see if there is any debris between the cone and the ring plate. Next closely inspect the cone, I don't know what material Shimpo uses to make their cones but it should be smooth without any flat spots or bumps that can cause vibrations. Now closely inspect the ring, are there any imperfections? Typically the rings are meant to be replaceable. Good luck Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dale pots Posted April 17, 2017 Report Share Posted April 17, 2017 If the pedal was pushed down & left that way while not in use it will put a flat spot on the cone. It may return to normal if it's not too old & hard. Other than that the belt could be separating, which could be hard to tell without removing it & turning it inside out (sort of speak). While the belt is off see if the motor pulley moves side to side with your hand (bearing), then turn it on & listen for a bearing. The worse thing is if the rubber suspension washers that hold the whole motor are wasted, they are integral with the bolts. Mine did that & I tried to work around that & never was the same. But it was 30 years old at the time. So I went out & bought a Rolls Royce (Brent). Lets hope yours is just a belt! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What? Posted April 18, 2017 Report Share Posted April 18, 2017 Here is a picture of the bushings. The ringcone may not be true. flywheel issue? Not sure about the belt. Call shimpo is best advice. Good fast service. The only problem is parts get expensive but $200 and you have another 20 years of life. I have Two. One is the Rincone Poppet. You did not mention which one. millerwood Posted April 20, 2017 Report Share Posted April 20, 2017 I replaced a cone on my rk2 which had lost some of the hard chrome plating near the small end. In doing so I also replaced the bearings in the motor, and dial indicated the cone to ensure it runs true. A bent motor shaft or bad bearings in the motor are suspects I think.
