I just curious about my terra sig that I've done, succeed or not succeed. First, what condition the best for terra sig? dry state or leather hard. I tried to apply on the dry state surface, there were some problems. I brushed it on the wheel for couple times, but the shiny just little. And the piece might be broken, because it was not fired yet. If applied on the leather hard, I think it was better. But because drying process is not the same, usually the edge part is quicker than in the bottom part. I think it's problem for terra sig application. Okay guys i need your input. Thanks... JLowes Posted October 5, 2011 Report Share Posted October 5, 2011 Natas, I personally use the terra sigillata when the pot is bone dry and brush it on, let it dry until the sheen is gone and polish it with a plastic bag such as we in the USA get at a grocery; say 1 mil thick. I usually polish once after three brush applications of the terra sigillata, but the article published today says polish after each coat for more sheen. It does not take much pressure to work up the sheen; I lightly hold the plastic and if the object is small, I may spin the object lightly while holding it with the plastic. If you fire much over Cone 04, the sheen will not stay, but the surface will still be very smooth (if it was smooth to start.) In a class I took this Summer, the instructor showed us how to pour the terra sigillata instead of brushing or spraying. That works, but you have to think well before pouring where the terra sigillata will go, and how to support the pot while pouring, and plan for how to catch the terra sigillata that runs off the pot. I prefer to stay with brushing for control, or perhaps spraying. I looked at your blog. Your work is very good. The sheen on your red clay pots from the terra sigillata is close to what I expect from my own. Regards, John L. Marcia Selsor Posted October 8, 2011 Report Share Posted October 8, 2011 I spray terra sig onto dry pieces and polish after each coat. Charlie Riggs dips his pots in terra sig.
