Mark C.
I think you need a ceramic engineer who could fix this when they have all the details. Mark
neilestrick
We would need a lot more information- clay formula, forming process, firing process, etc. Are they solid, or do they have holes like house bricks? Thickness?
TJR
Looks like you have some white particles that might be quartz or whiting. If you are making bricks directly as dug out of the ground, you have a problem. Your solution is to make a slip out of your clay, screen it with a window screen, then dry it. Looks like the clay has a lot of impurities. You may have to look for another, cleaner source of clay. TJR.
Ben
I think TJR is correct. The first picture shows "lime pop". Lime pop is due to particles of limestone in the raw clay. In the kiln limestone converts ti quick lime. After firing the quick lime absorbs moisture and expands breaking the clay. The limestone must be removed or ground tp dust. The other problem i see is that this clay is not plastic enough for the forming method being used or the clay is too dry. Are these bricks extruded? I think the quality of the clay is to blame. Where do you get clay?
