Gaz glaze recipe adjusted to be fired in an electric kiln

Recommended Posts

What should be change. look up to in order to adjust glazes suited for gas firring  when we want to use the on bodies in an electric kiln ?

if originally the gas glaze recipe is for Kon 6 does it mean that in electric kiln it will suit higher temp.?

What do you think?

Hi Asnat, Welcome to the Forum!

The glazes should perform the same, given the heat work* is equivalent.

Appearance, however, could be very different, due to the atmosphere - the gas kiln may be throttled for "reduction", where carbon monoxide influences the glaze color.

*pyrometric cones reflect "heat work" - time and temperature

If the gas kiln was fired in a neutral atmosphere then there probably won't be any differences in the appearance of the glaze(s).

However, if the gas kiln was reduction fired then yes, some of the glazes and claybodies will look different. Copper reds (in reduction firing) will be green in electric kiln firings.  Iron is an active flux in reduction whereas in a neutral atmosphere it isn't.  Also, in an electric kiln firing iron speckles won't develop in the claybody like they do in reduction firings. True celedons, and shinos need a reducing atmosphere but faux celedons and shinos are possible in an electric kiln.
