Gonepotty
Hi all, need to make some calcined clay . Don’t have a bisqued vessel to put the EPK in…would an unglazed terracotta pot be alright?? Or any other ideas thanks so much, kathryn
Roberta12
Would your terracotta pot be able to withstand bisque temperatures?
Kelly in AK
Calcining clay only has to get to around 1200° F, if that helps. Tony Hansen has some good info on it if you haven’t already seen: https://digitalfire.com/glossary/calcination Roberta12
Callie Beller Diesel
Any container going into your next bisque will work. I wouldn’t trust commercial terracotta, just on the basis you don’t know what temp it’ll melt at for sure. Roberta12

You probably don't want a melted mess on your shelf. Like @Kelly in AK pointed out, you only need to get to 1200 degrees for calcine. When I calcine epk, I put it in the bisque load simply for ease and convenience. If I am reading correctly, you could even roast it, which is 1000 degrees F. I wouldn’t use a big flat platter with no foot ring that might already be susceptible to cracking in the bisque. Something the size of a soup bowl works great.
