Is "batt wash" the British term for kiln wash?

I am pretty sure it is. I worked in England as a potter, but it was in 1978. I'm a bit foggy on the terminology we used. You would not be putting kiln wash on your throwing bats, so I would say your guess is correct.

Ah. I think so too, only the recipe for it (from Jane Hamlyn) in the book calls for a mixture of cellulose wallpaper paste, alumina hydrate and ball clay. Perhaps the wallpaper paste is so that it adheres to kiln shelves and maybe give it more body to resist the sodium corrosion from the salt firing....? Anyway, it is probably the same.
