Soda fired piece glaze changed in dishwasher?

Recommended Posts

I recently had a mug come out of a soda kiln with heavy carbon trapping. When I washed it (in the dishwasher), parts of the originally black finish is now speckled in white. The parts of the mug that didn’t get the heavy carbon trapping are fine.  can’t figure out what happened. I’ve never had any soda fired pieces change in the dishwasher before. Does anyone know what may have happened here?

This is what the other side of the mug looks like—this part was unaffected by the dishwasher: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U0bId6ysn-o3cTKwO4i-HvstpYWgWTQf/view?usp=drivesdk

Any thoughts about what happened here is appreciated! Thanks!

Dishwashers can be fairly aggressive on non durable glazes. This a soda fired piece so not something designed and tested durable. Looks like the dishwasher dissolved some of the surface of the glaze. It’s soda fired so hard to predict and no guarantee it will end up durable.
