how to dispose of underglaze/glaze water

Recommended Posts

hi! i am a new hobby potter so please bare with me

im wondering how you all dispose of underglaze water safely? i couldn't find much information on this online

currently using AMACO velvet underglazes zinc free and AMACO HF-9 Zinc-Free Clear glaze. in their safety data sheet it says to avoid disposing in waterways and sewers. im reluctant to dispose in my lawn since they aren't very good for the land if some one wants to grow plants on it one day

i saw that some people who use water-based paints (Acrylic paints) for arts and crafts use aluminium sulfate and lime powder to filter out the paint from the water and dispose of the paint in household garbage. could this method work for underglazes?

Could you do a screenshot or link from where are you getting this info from? I pulled up the SDS's for a few of the Amaco Velvet's and their HF-9 Zinc Free Clear Glaze, didn't see a H411 or H412 warning which designates that the product contains materials that are toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.  Are there different SDS's for New Zealand than what is on the Amaco website?

I think i am seeing the same one as you (US SDS, UK SDS) as i didnt find any SDS specific for NZ

it doesn't state H411 or H412 warning.  it just says "Please read Section 2 completely. If any environmental warnings such as; H411 or H412 are listed in Section 2, please use appropriate procedures when disposing of product and container. Do not put materials into waterways or sewers."

I thought that meant, do not dispose of underglazes in waterways or sewers, regardless of H411 or H412 being present or not

As there are no warnings in section 2 this isn't a problem.

There are exceptions but for the most part it would be transition metal salts that would be a concern for disposal in regards to  this. Pigments used in underglazes are made from stains which are not water soluble like metal salts.

I put my underglaze rinse water in my clay rinse bucket. After the particles settle, you can pour off the water. It usually takes me a couple months before my bucket needs to be emptied. Then I let it dry out a while and scrape it into the trash. I get a second bucket going for the clay rinse while that one's drying.
