JamesS
Regarding the James Stiff & Sons, Lambeth factory. I've got a photo of the factory here - https://boroughphotos.org/lambeth/thames-foreshore-lambeth/ - and am trying to work out what the cup shaped plates are for on top of the chimneys. Just advertising signs or something connected to the pottery process like baffles? Any info would be very helpful to my MA dissertation if you have a moment to look. Bill Kielb
My best guess is they could close them and seal the flue when not firing. Easiest to fashion a round door by cutting it in half and hinging each side. Probably not water proof, instead that would be taken care of by proper drainage in the design. Probably bird and critter proof though. So my guess, operable doors. Or flue cover. I’m pretty sure you can see the operating lever and cable to the ground. (Minor discovery reference in your dissertation will be fine )
oldlady
bird nest prevention is really important. one came out of my heating boiler chimney top last that must have weighed 12 pounds. it has been covered with hardware cloth, the 1/4 inch size.
