elaine clapper
We lost power last night. I was five and a half hours into glaze firing a load when we lost power. In the past when there has been a power outage I have been cautious, just let the kiln cool off to room temperature, looked at the ware and then refired. The kiln is a Skutt 1027 KLM. I am glaze firing to cone 5. For future reference, would it be a problem to restart the kiln without letting it cool off?
Bill Kielb
I have always restarted only concerned if it had approached say 200 - 300 degrees of its finishing temperaturę where almost all the heatwork is done. Prior to that everything is relatively reversible and just cools off. Restarting it has never caused me an issue with the control either.
neilestrick
I agree with Bill. Restart it unless it's within a couple hundred degrees of being done. At that point when it shuts down the glaze can be at a point where bad things happen, typically crawling, so it's worth letting it cool and weeding out the ruined pieces before refiring the others.
