DirtRoads
I've made at least 200 of these and never had one crack. This isn't just a crack ... it's a split. I had 2 of them crack in one load .... No changes except maybe the weather. It's hotter now. Any ideas on how this happened? I hope I don't see more of them. Pugaboo
What does the glaze look like along the crack? Knowing this can help us know whether it cracked in the heating or in the cooling stage. T
Judith B
Is this a new batch of clay?
Benzine
I've had some wares do something similar, and it was from a glaze fit issue. The thickness of the inner or outer glaze, cause them to pull on the clay differently.
DirtRoads
I would describe it as a "clean" break. Would that be during cooling?
DirtRoads
Is this a new batch of clay? Not a new batch. I'm over half through a pallet.
Benzine
Yep, usually during cooling. In fact, I had a nice little vase, with a new glaze combination that turned out quite nice. I took it out, admired it, and set it near my classroom desk. I looked at it a few times throughout the end of the day. At the end of the day, I looked at it again, and it had severely cracked, similar to the pictures you posted. So we are talking hours later, that it cracked. DirtRoads
Hmmm .... the base glaze was thicker than usual. I have someone that glazes and I don't check every batch. I noticed it thick ... maybe it was this. I had no idea glazes could do that. Those 2 glaze combinations share that glaze. The glaze was so thick I put an extra coat on top of the base glaze to bring out that turquoise green. That crack is almost 1/2 inch wide ... I never considered it could be the glaze. I've put out at least 1000 pieces in both of those colors and never saw cracks like these. Do drying errors show in the bisque stage?
neilestrick
There could be cracks from drying that don't show up until the glaze firing. I've had pieces ripped apart by glaze before when I didn't glaze the inside.
