Hello potters!
So I was asked to make mugs and plates for a friend. He wanted their family emblem on them so I had a stamp made to imprint the clay.
Looks nice, but I fond we don't see the emblem enough... the glaze is too thick in some areas, and a little hard to control...
Any tricks and tips or just a completely different other way to achieve this?
Here are pics of the results. Any idea welcomme, I still have 6 sets of mugs and plates to do!
Actually I realized after posting that with bisque fire, I leave to top open for the 1st 2 hours, which I don't with the glaze, so in that sense, it makes sense since I don't have the exact same "settings."
Thanks for your response, it all makes sense.
Hello potters,
I am puzzled... I have an old Gare manual kiln.
I fire bisque at 04 and glaze at cone 6.
Both take about the same time, there is about a 1/2 hour difference between the bisque and glaze firing. I just find it odd that there would only be a 1/2 hour difference between the two... I guess I was expecting the glaze fire to be longer.
I have test cones in my kiln, and they're not completely off, today's glaze fire seems to have a little overfired and the kiln turned off just before the 6 hour mark.
What do you guys think?
Nathalie
Hello potters!
I am having a hard time finding dry glazes... Maybe I'm not looking for the right thing, but I am not ready to mix my own recipes yet, so I am looking for dry glazes and I am having a hard time finding what I want... most of the time it comes in pints... I just want a few colors and some clear glaze :-)
Firing at cone 6, can you recommend websites where I can buy dry glazes?
Thank you!
Nathalie
Bought an old kiln ans I changed the elements and the kiln sitter tube. It fires FAST!
It's a 5 switch manual kiln so I start with 2 hours on the 1st switch, than 1 hour per switch.
On both the bisque fire and the glaze fire, the kiln sitter shut down at the 6 - 6 1/2 hour mark...
Is it too fast? Can this cause issue with the glaze and pottery? I was expecting a good 10 hours glaze firing... the witness cones were a little underfired but not by much...
I am just surprised... Should I wait longer between each switch? Or is it okay?
Haven't opened the kiln yet, it's cooling down...
So I was pretty exited about it until I started really looking at it ... once in my garage.
The elements were totally cooked and bulging. Luckily, I was given new elements with the kiln.
The kiln sitter rod is completely toasted and bent...so I ordered a new one.
While removing the elements, I chipped a few pieces of brick here and there, so I think the elements were never changed....
So now I've got all the parts and I am ready to put it back together but I have a final question : Should I test it before closing the front part of the kiln to make sure all the wiring works?
Let me know your thoughts!
Thanks! :-)
P.S.: I am hooked! Love making pottery!
