Best Low Fire Clay For Wheel Throwing?

Recommended Posts

I will be teaching a workshop to kids next month and am looking for advice on the most suitable LOW FIRE clay for wheel throwing. I want something smooth, low grog ... preferably Laguna since that company is available to me. Will be using brush-on Duncan Envision glazes and be firing to cone 05 .. Color doesn't matter ... but grey preferred ....... any advice for this new forum member?? thanks so much ... Happy 2011 !

I have worked with some of the Laguna clays, and found them nice to work with. However, I live closer to Standard Ceramics, and have had great clays from them. When I was teaching, if I had decisions to make about a clay body within a temp range for a specific purpose I would call the company and get recommendations from them. Often if I called early enough they would send me some sample clays to try out before I ordered. In your case, maybe you could get a recommendation from them, and get some sample of others to help you the next time you teach throwing.
