natanata
Hi! I have added handmade grog and basalt spots to my stoneware, does anyone knows if adding too much basalt can cause melting or explosion? And if yes, how much basalt is ok to be added to the clay body? Thank you!
jrgpots
I have added basalt dust to Laguna Half and half cone 5-6 clay body. In oxidation it creates a cookie and cream speckle pattern. I sieved with a 20 mesh and used about 150 gm of basalt to 1000 gm of premixed clay. You can use larger sized basalt gravel as well to obtain larger speckles. The bowl below is Laguna half and half with 150 gm basalt dust (20 mesh) in 1000 gm premixed clay body. Clear glaze on 1/3, oatmeal glaze on 1/3 and raw clay on the rest; fired to cone 6 oxidation. Good luck to you, Jed

jrgpots
I like it for small pieces. I have a hard time pulling it higher than 12 inches. It does well with glazes: quite forgiving with them. What is your experience with it? Jed

What is your experience with it? Jed I haven't use it yet. Trying to find the elusive perfect clay body. I mostly use Plainsman M370, (porcelain like stoneware, similar to BMix, but much whiter and without the slime while throwing), I would have to get my supplier to order it in and they always ding me a fair bit for that so I was hoping to get a better idea of it's properties than what is on the Laguna site before I do that. How smooth is 1/2 and 1/2 and do you have any weeping with mugs or vases with it? Thanks, Min
jrgpots
It is a little sandy. No slime. Responds well when throwing. In oxidation it is off white. It takes glazes well; very forgiving with them. I've not used it in reduction. I have had no weeping. I used to use Dover white which is very smooth. I am trying electric brown, and moroccan sand...still searching. Good luck to you, Jed Jed, thank you! It looks really nice! So basically its ok for high temperatures, i mean like 1200 C. Great! What is this beautiful oatmeal glaze? is it glanced or more like matt?
jrgpots
The oatmeal glaze is a cone 6 Laguna product. It is the matt glaze on the bowl (from 2:00 to 6:00 position). A clean glaze was layered over part of the oatmeal glaze (6:00 to 8:00 position) and resulted it a glossy white. Clear glaze over the clay body is seen from 8:00 to 11:00 position with raw clay from 11:00 to 2:00. Wheni fired to bisque, cone 05, the basalt did not melt and looked kind of dull. But it melted at cone 5 and gave great color in the cone 5-6 firing. Jed
