Once Or Single Firing

Hi, I’m searching information for what we call in France “mono cuissonâ€, i.e. firing only once from bone-dry greenware until stoneware or earthenware without stopping and glazing. I’ve an electric kiln with computer. I don’t need to glaze.

 

I guess my pots must be completely dry. Can I heap up my pots? What kind of firing schedule and ramp?

If you're not using any glaze, you can just use one of the standard pre-programmed cone firing settings in your digital controller. Just make sure the beginning of the firing is slow enough to accommodate the thickness of your work, to prevent cracking or explosions. But done dry, reasonably thin and even work can be fired at just about any schedule without any problems. If you're doing thicker sculptural work, do a custom program where you follow a typical slow bisque schedule up to bisque temps, then add the top end of a glaze profile up from there.

Not sure if you can stack them up without some sticking especially with stoneware. This information is from one firing I tried about a year ago so I may be wrong. I stacked and once fired. None fused together completely, they did come apart but also left bits of themselves on other pots.

Sorry, I did mean to include that. They were not glazed.

 

All that happened was where they were touching little bits came off one pot and stuck to the other. I remember one nice bowl that had a foot-ring stuck in the middle 

The only way to really find out is fire a load with a few different variations on stacking pots vs non stacking and see what happens. Different clay will change the outcome, I was using "school buff".
