Chris2Kayla
I am a complete novice here and I was mixing up Campana's Self leveling Kiln Wash. I accidently had my scale set to ounces instead of grams. I ended up putting WAY too much Darvan 7 in. Do I need to just throw it out and start over or is the wash going to be ok? Mark C.
More details needed.-was the whole batch done with ozs? or just the darvan
Chris2Kayla
just the Darvan.
Mark C.
Can you give me the formula -list of ingredients as I think the darn is just a fluid leveling deal and will just burn off. also how much did you mix up?
Chris2Kayla
This is the recipe that i used. It makes about 2.5 gallons. 2500g EPK 2500g Glomax 5000g Alumina Hydrate 4250 ml Water 25g Darvan
neilestrick
So you put in 25 ounces of Darvan? That's about 700 grams, so quite a difference. If it works as far as application goes, I would test fire a little spot to make sure it's not going to affect anything in the firing. Darvan has sodium in it, so I would be concerned that it will affect the wash negatively.
Chris2Kayla
It was closer to 18.5 ounces (only had a Pint and was going to go get more if needed), but yeah it was quite alot. Planning on test firing my kiln (bought a used kiln and want to see if it has any issues before I load it up) I will put some on a broken shelf I have and see what happens. Mark C.
Testing is the only way. I would test before tossing
neilestrick
The other option is to add enough of the other ingredients that the math all works out. Of course, you'd end up with about 52 gallons of kiln wash.
Chris2Kayla
So... Yeah it didn't survive the firing. It did not stick to the shelf and crawled. Back to the drawing board.
Min
The Campana recipe works fine without any Darvan. Just use enough water to make a pouring cream consistency.
Mark C.
If I was you I would mix up the same batch as you posted in 1st post- do not add that much water and zero Darvan. Mix up like heavy cream and use a roller and roll it on your shelves -dry between coats two coats max. here is post on this I did back in 2012 Be happy.
