SmartsyArtsy
Hi, I am about to mix for white slip without ball clay. If I increase silica, can I make a batch? any help is appreciated
bciskepottery
Here is one I use: Gold Art 30% EPK 50% Custer Feldspar 10% Silica 10%

SShirley
What recipe are you using? You should be able to substitute EPK if you have it. The clay is what makes it slip, so extra silica won't help. Sylvia
SmartsyArtsy
Well, I did not have my glaze calc software with me yesterday and just figured that the ball clay is higher in silica than is EPK so that's why I increased the silica. But now, looking at other recipes, the Alumina/Silica amounts are all over the place with wide variations in ratio so now I'm very confused. Also, the Boron varies a great deal. I just want to mix a batch to use on greenware, fire bisque and then fire cone 5.
Chris Campbell
Are you considering that you could lose a whole kiln load because of this slip? I am a big fan of trying stuff, but I like the odds to be somewhat in my favor. You might be better off waiting until you feel confident about the slip you are using. I am having a kid's workshop tomorrow and wanted to make a batch. I just took some of my recycled clay body and added frit 3124 and Zircopax. Should be fine. Sometimes I get fixated on a question and don't see what's right in front of me!! Thanks everyone
