rakukuku
Hi, I am new to this forum. I do a lot of raku and mostly use newspaper as a combustable in the trash can. Sometimes I have some really tough black stuff that takes a lot of work to scrub off. not just the usual grey film. Is there any other combustable that doesn't leave so much black gunk? I avoid softwood sawdust for this reason but don't know if other materials make a difference. Our trash cans have been used for years and have quite a build up of black goo. could that be it? rakukuku
Marcia Selsor
Welcome to the forum. Oven cleaner helps remove scum from combustibles. Also you can raise your piece onto bricks in the combustible chamber to keep it out of direct contact. Marcia
Chris Campbell
If you have goo on your can lid drips could be a problem. Might need to scrub it clean .... Yuck! For raku I usually fold one sheet of newspaper in a square and set the work on it. Great reduction with little clean up. Sawdust is also pretty easy to clean up after. My go to cleaner is Zud. I clean up crackle while it is still hot with a torch.
