ayjay
Crawl glaze, sometimes known as a Lichen or a reticulated glaze. I've used these now and again, it's always been a small area that I've used it on and so I mix it to be quite thick and apply by brush. I'd now like to use it on a larger piece, (all around the rim of a platter) and would prefer to spray it on. Will it be OK to make it the normal consistency that I'd usually use for spraying? Is there a best way to spray to achieve a heavy coat of a crawl glaze? Should I just keep spraying until it looks right? Should I spray two, or even three coats? If I did that should I allow it to dry in between coats? Not sure if that's a good idea,as it does begin to crawl as it dries out and any further coats will fill the interstices . .................or should I just treat it as a normal glaze and aim for one sprayed coat of a normal thickness? Min
I've sprayed a crawl on ikebana's. I mixed it up really thick and sprayed the first coat then let that dry just for a few seconds before doing the next coats. If I let it dry too much then I just landed up blowing off the cracked glaze. I sprayed practice pieces until I got what I thought was a thick coat on then watched them to make sure they cracked then did the real pots. perkolator
crawle/textured glazes like this are dependent on how you apply - a thin spray will definitely look different than a single brushed layer. i think you will have to do some testing to learn to control it if you plan to spray and have never done it with this glaze. i've sprayed a crawl glaze a few times and it definitely gave a more even surface than when i traditionally would brush/pour/dip the same glaze - not necessarily a bad thing, but different. i used a Critter siphon feed sprayer so i could mix it thicker than what i'd typically have going through a different sprayer. ayjay
OK, thanks, a bit of experimental spraying coming up tomorrow. I'm more concerned with it being even than anything else, I can brush a standard glaze on reasonably well if I need to, but only previously using it in small areas I've never needed to brush a crawl glaze that evenly. I'll see how thick I can get it through the sprayer first.
