Mishima with soy based wax resist

I’ve heard that a soy-based wax resist is the only type that can be drawn through with a needle (for Mishima)  that won’t yield a ragged line.  Unfortunately, the only soy-based wax resist I know of is Canadian and I haven’t found a supplier for it in the US.  Does anyone know of a soy-based resist available in the US? If not, what about melting soy candle wax and brushing it on? I’d appreciate any advice/tips. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I've used Forbes wax resist with good success for this. What you don't want is a wax resist that is oil based (these are the ones that are difficult to wash out of brushes).

I have Forbes but have not had a clean line unless I use an xacto. Do you know if it makes a difference how long you let it dry before drawing through it? Maybe I’ve been waiting  too long?

Clay needs to be leatherhard, I would try sooner if it hasn't been crisp lines and see what happens. When I did it I waited until the sheen was gone, You are using a smooth claybody right?

Oh I meant how long to wait after applying the wax to carve.

You can inscribe it as soon as the wax is dry to the touch. Let the underglaze dry before wiping it back.

I use the wax from Ceramic Supply Chicago, and it works fine as long you don't let it dry too long, like don't let it sit overnight. It also depends on how soft the clay is. Too dry and the clay will flake, too. I typically apply the wax and then cut my lines as soon as it's dry to the touch.

Thanks so much! Do you also use a needle? An xacto makes such a clean line but it’s too awkward for me to draw with.

Yes, I use a needle. You have to let the burrs dry for a bit before brushing them off or they'll just smudge back into the lines.
