Setting up my first kiln - cement board on walls?

Based on the many threads I've read here, I am planning to put my kiln in the right corner of my new studio. It will have 2 layers of concrete board underneath and be 18" from either wall. One wall is brick, but the other is drywall. Does the drywall need to be protected by cement board as well, or is it OK if it is 18" away from the kiln?  If cement board is needed, how large an area should it cover? Thank you!

If you have 18" clearance then the cement board is not needed. If you want it there just to be extra safe, then have it extend about a foot above the top of the kiln. It comes in 3x5 sheets, so 5 feet is just right. It's best to install it with a gap between it and the wallboard behind it, so nail up some thin furring strips first.

When placing a kiln in your studio, it is generally recommended to provide adequate protection for the surrounding walls, especially if they are made of drywall. While the kiln being 18" away from the drywall is a good distance, it is still beneficial to provide an additional layer of protection. Using cement board on the drywall behind the kiln is a prudent approach to safeguard against potential heat transfer and ensure the safety of your studio. The size of the cement board will depend on the dimensions of your kiln and the area that may be exposed to heat. It's recommended to cover an area larger than the footprint of the kiln to provide a sufficient buffer. Consulting with professional or local building codes can provide more specific guidance based on your kiln's size and requirements.
