FloCat
You're such a nice, helpful group, so I'm here with a quickie question. I'm changing the belts on my old Pacifica wheel. Is there some kind of tool that can aid in getting the belts onto the flywheel without breaking my hands or giving me a stroke from straining to pull the things in place? I'm not as strong as I used to be, even my "used to be" me would probably have trouble with this!!! I followed the direction to the T regarding measuring the old belts. Sheffield even said that if the old belts were 49.5" you should get 42" belts, which of course makes sense. And that's exactly what they measured and what I did. But it feels like trying to getting a pair of size 36 jeans onto a 46 size waist.
Bill Kielb
Providing it’s the right size, has anyone showed you how to roll a belt into place? At just 1:00 minute in the instructor rolls a fan belt on. https://youtu.be/cSeRBFtMLIM Careful though, keep your fingers away from being pinched. Here is a Pacifica video https://youtu.be/Iw5cpbXNc24 Edited February 15, 2023 by Bill Kielb
FloCat
No, I haven't had experience rolling belts into place. I saw a video from Pacifica showing the process, but it didn't look like the guy was going to get a hernia doing it. I understand the concept, but it's the power that I need in my hands, some kind of a tool, or I need a little bit less space between. Would it work to stretch the belts before putting them on, like put my foot on it and pull? Or would that compromise their strength? And yes, I did put them in hot water first. BTW how long do you keep them in the hot water?
Bill Kielb
I wouldn’t stretch it. The Pacifica video shows them soaking in hot water though - not boiling, but hot tap water. Are you certain you have the right size would be my thought.
FloCat
Thank you for your answers. I completely edited this last message. I figured out that having the wheel upturned on end was not working for me and my weak arms. So, I put it on its side, then I could use my weight to stretch the belt and got them all in place ... with only one cut on my finger, because I was too impatient to go get my garden gloves. Got them and finished the task. I might add a video here of a realistic version of changing a belt for those of us who can't just muscle them on.
