cafedunier
Hey there I'm trying to make an oyster shell out of pottery, and I'm wondering if there is a glaze (not a luster) that will give me a similar to a mother of pearl look. One that's non toxic. If not, then is there a combination of under glaze and/ or glaze techniques to get that oyster sheen?
Jeff Longtin
The process of layering glazes is how you achieve an "iridescent" quality. Layering a stiff glaze, on top of a runny glaze, or vice versa, is the way to add complexity to your glazes. The Amaco Potters Choice glaze page shows some examples of such combinations. The one bummer, which requires testing, is that the runny glaze may run too much and you have glaze on the shelf.
neilestrick
Layering glazes is a great way to go, especially if you can find a glaze with titanium in it for the top layer. You won't get something as iridescent as a luster, but you should be able to find something that approximates it well enough to make it believable.
