Harriet
Hi, I make a lot of molds and usually make them from turned plaster but have a fired ceramic piece I'd like to cast and wanted to see if anyone has any extra tricks or suggestions? I will soft soap the unfired bit at the bottom, the rest has got a gloss glaze on it. I imagine it'll be harder to get out of the mold but could be wrong. Any tips/suggestions would be welcome! Thanks in advance.
Min
If the unglazed bottom is really vitrified it should be fine but if not I would seal it before soaping.
Jeff Longtin
Soft soap works well to seal plaster surfaces, it's not as effective, when sealing fired/vitreous surfaces. (But it can help to provide a "release".) If I'm in a situation where I need the form to survive and I'm unsure how vitreous/porous it is I will often apply a thin coat of vaseline. That way I know I'm applying a protective layer that should prevent sticking.
