dkline
Hi Community! I took some dishes out of the kiln around 230F and there were some small white looking flakes on some pieces that I tried wiping away with my mitts. I think it was from the kiln shelves? Two of my bowls look like some flakes got stuck in the glaze? Can I grind these parts out without damaging the food safety of the dish? Any suggestions or thoughts on these white flakes? dk Edited June 15, 2022 by Callie Beller Diesel Changed title for more engagement
neilestrick
Can you post a picture? Could be kiln wash. What cone did you fire to?
Callie Beller Diesel
Hi and welcome DK! I’ve taken the liberty of changing the title of your post so it gets more engagement. I do agree with Neil that the most likely culprit is kiln wash from the shelves. Bits of it can get into pieces if care isn’t taken to brush off any loose bits from each shelf during loading. They may be fused into the glaze if that’s the case. If it’s a piece for a commission or other sale, you can grind them down, do a glaze touch up and re-fire. Or if it’s just for yourself and the rough bit isn’t bothersome to you, you can just smooth it down and proceed.
