Cove
Hi all, I’ve found that my cone 06 glazed pieces have pinholes when they’re fired on shelves closer to the top of the kiln. Does anyone know why that is? My top peep hole is open. thanks!
Babs
Why do you leave your top peep hole open? Top of kiln Ccooler , adding soak of maybe 10minutes at end of firing schedule may allow the glaze to seal over the pinholes. Photo of the pinholes wil help with correct diagnosis. All glazes or just some? What claybody are you using. Start with the soak to see if that works.
Cove
Thanks, Babs. I left the top peep hole open to let out the gasses but maybe I should do that only with bisque firing? I do a 15 minute hold already. I’m using terracotta clay with a majolica glaze on top. thanks for your help!
Babs
Do you use cones? Possibly your 15 min hold takes it past the opt temp for your glaze. A photo of the pinholes would help decide. What cone are bisquing to? Some earthenwares gas. If your glaze is behaving lower in the kiln be interesting to place cones on top shelf as well as throughout your kiln. You may be surprised. I put top bung on lid in after about 700 deg in bisque and after about 200 in glaze No chemist here, just a watcher.
