Leaking mugs

Recommended Posts

I’m having an issue with leaking mugs.  I’ll start by saying I use cone specific brown clay (Sheffield 4D cone 5-7). I have a manual Skutt kiln in which I bisque fire pieces to ^04 and glaze fire ^6 with a 10 min hold on high and 20 min hold on med. Witness cones suggest the temp reaches 6.5-7.   The pieces look great, but after testing if they hold water, the majority of them leak after 24 hours. The cracks are not visible but the water starts to deposit in a straight line across the bottom. Not sure if that’d be considered an S crack.  Please note I also only use amaco’s potter’s choice glazes (cone5/6). Wondering if maybe this could indicate a bad fit? Could a bad fit cause the Clay itself to crack? The Clay is most definitely vitrified I’ve tested many times.  Very minimal absorption.  Virtually  0%… So that obviously is another thought, did I over fire the Clay? And would that cause a crack in the base?  Any insight/comments are appreciated.
