cone 6 glazes

cracked pot

Recommended Posts

I just finished a wonderful workshop with Nan Rothwell at her studio in Virginia. It was a very productive workshop as Nan is not only a great potter, but a gifted teacher. However the clay we used in the workshop is Highwater Phoenix which is a cone 6-10 clay. My glazes are all cone 6. I had a lot of crazing using Coyote glazes on previous firings with Phoenix clay. Can anyone tell me is they know what cone 6 glazes work well with Phoenix?

You might have difficulty finding a cone 6 glaze that matches. At cone 6, absorbency of Phoenix is 3.9% (according to Highwater's web site), while at cone 10, absorbency is less than 1%. Your glaze is maturing at cone 6, but the clay body is not and the expansion rates are not in sync. Through trial and error, you might be able to modify a cone 6 glaze recipe to reduce crazing. Phoenix is a terrific clay body, but I only use it at cone 10.
