Mirrored-K-Studio
Does having a bagwall effect how the chimney damper works?
Mark C.
Any bag wall will affect flow so yes it will or can-if the wall is to high it slows down draw to short to much flow-its a relationship The dampener also affects flow as does the the height of chimney (draw is more with taller stack for example)
neilestrick
In a downdraft/crossdraft, the bagwall keeps the flame/heat from traveling directly across the bottom of the kiln from the burners/firebox to the flue opening. It forces the heat/flame to go upward before being pulled down and out the flue. If the bottom of the kiln tends to run hot, raise the bagwall a bit. If the top runs hot, lower the bagwall a bit. Half a brick will often make a noticeable difference. In a wood burning crossdraft kiln the bagwall is typically taller than in a gas kiln, and checkerboard- with openings between each brick to allow for ash and flame to move through a bit. In a gas kiln it's shorter, maybe only 9-13" high. It doesn't usually take much in a gas kiln to have a big effect.
C.Banks
I'm wondering too now does the bag wall affect the flow or just the path? if the primary and secondary air remains unchanged then the answer could be no - the damper operates the same with our without bagwall. the bagwall does not change the supply of fuel or air. once the draw of a kiln is established the flow rate of gases should stay the same regardless of the path good question though gets a person thinking
neilestrick
The bag wall will change how the kiln responds to changes in the damper, but I don't think it will affect the amount of air flow.
