SeaWoman.Studio
I'm interested in doing pit firing in an updraft kiln made from a metal barrel. The laws in CA, especially in Sacramento can be pretty tight when it comes to what we do on our properties and I can't seem to get a clear answer about whether or not it's legal, or how to go about getting a fire permit IF they would allow this type of thing. Does anyone have experience pit firing in Northern CA?
neilestrick
Call your local fire marshal and describe the process in detail and see what he/she says. If you're not allowed open burning in your area then it's probably a no-go.
CactusPots
In Southern California we would do something like this in the desert. I'd suggest some kind of similar environment. Maybe on a beach? Nottingham Art in SC did a pit firing in a open industrial area with FD permissions. If you could delay and schedule for a rainy day, maybe that would be an advantage.
