AlachuaArtist
Hello, My very old Duncan kiln (The Teacher EA 820-2) is starting to burn out elements. I bought it used, & have replaced the 1st element about 2 months ago; now, a second one has burned out. Should I just keep replacing them as they burn out, or "bite the bullet" and replace them all? Thanks for your suggestions!
neilestrick
If they're burning out due to age/ wear, replace them all.
neilestrick
If your elements are burning out because they're old, then you're letting them go too long. Ideally we want to replace elements when their resistance changes by 10%. After that they're firing inefficiently, and firings are costing you a lot more (up to twice as much). And when elements wear too much you're more likely to do damage to the bricks when you remove them, because the coils expand as they age. Most of the kiln manufacturers have good videos on their web sites that show how to measure element resistance with an inexpensive digital multi-meter.
