Bysmerian
Hello everybody! I've been taking pottery classes for a few years, and I kind of stumbled into making agateware with my current projects. Sadly, I don't have anything finished yet to show off; I know that I could be using stains for greater color control, but right now I'm interested in using oxides instead. I'm pretty sure I can get both from my local pottery supply store. So far I'm just using some black iron oxide I have on hand; I also have red and yellow Iron Oxide, but given that the first piece I did came out of the bisque firing with the previously black oxide-blended clay now red/pink, I'm not sure that they would change anything. So right now I'm just wondering what kind of oxides are good for blending into clay, especially for throwing. Mainly, I'm concerned about toxicity and whether or not they would risk the clay body or concurrently firing pieces in the process. The kiln they'd be finished in is a gas-fired Cone 10 Reduction, FWIW
