oldlady
a photo would help understand the degree of gloss you are looking for. there are a number of books about tile making in the early 1900s. i read one, though, that made it seem that the author did not like one in Detroit, mich. Pewabic tile was all over the city in public buildings everywhere. their landscape style tiles were used as fireplace surrounds in some huge homes and the department stores , hudson's in particular, used them in the ladies rooms and as a surround at water fountains. check out Matawi tile, ann arbor for some idea of modern makers who are doing similar work.
