Island_potter
Still learning lots and just working with a DIY gas kiln for raku work at the moment. Would it be possible to fire stoneware cone5-6 in a raku kiln and plug the inlet/outlet to let it cool? Thanks for any help.
neilestrick
Raku kilns have a lot of power, but they're not really set up properly for firing to cone 5/6. You can get to raku temps with just about any shim-sham setup. Getting to cone 5 takes a proper setup, especially if you want to do it with good control for evenness and atmosphere. Are you converting an electric kiln, or building from scratch? Tell us more.
Island_potter
Building from scratch. Have built a very small kiln at the moment and looking to make something a bit bigger. But it might be more worth while waiting and investing in an electric or gas kiln later when ready.

How are you building it- what materials, etc?

I don't know the exact thickness but I think could be two layers of 1/2 inch wool. I was thinking of making a larger one like the usual dustbin / oil drum size. Gas burner in the bottom and flue out the top.
PeterH
Just FYI "little rocket" kilns can reach stoneware temperatures. Interesting as a show demonstration, but for even small-scale production? http://www.ian-gregory.co.uk/kilns.html PS Posted because it mentions insulation thickness, shows chimney dimensions and mentions partially covering chimney vent.
