AdamFG
Hi all, O I'm sure I've been told / read somewhere that I can't use Chromium Oxide on food / functional ware as it will leach through any over glaze and is highly toxic... I was thinking of using it on some plates I've made. Plans was to apply to bisque ware, run through on a bisque fire again and then cover with a food safe glaze. Clay is earthenware and final firing will be to 1080.c Any thoughts on this? Thanks Adam
neilestrick
It would be easier and safer to use a commercial underglaze of the same color.
Min
Chromium oxide is very refractory, if you use it for brushwork under a glaze chances are the glaze will crawl away from it. If you do use an underglaze containing chrome make sure the covering glaze is zinc free or you will get brown from the chrome + zinc. Big difference between what potters use, chromium oxide, versus the hexavalent form of chrome in regards to toxicity.
