Rob Flye
Someone asked me why a bag wall was called that. Any ideas? Thanks, Rob Flye
Mark C.
My guess is its a spin off from old bag-just kidding Mark
TJR
My guess is its a spin off from old bag-just kidding Mark Why are those round wooden or plaster things you put your pots on called"bats"? Same theory. The old bat, the old bag/wall. Some potters call it a baffle wall. TJR
Marcia Selsor
My guess is it comes as an expansion of the use of the word "bag" as to encompass or contain. The bag wall contained the pots or kiln load separating it from the direct flame as a baffle. Marcia

Yes, I was trying to be witty, and I did not answer the question. Thank-you for taking the high road. TJR.
Marcia Selsor
I was thinking about that today as a matter of fact...like some potters quotes "Won't hold water"...refers to a weak argument using a bad pot as a metaphor. I'll have to search my Oxford Dictionary but I have a lecture class in the morning to 90 students followed by another Art History class. Since I recycled a bunch of porcelain today after 2 studio classes, I am hitting the sack! Maybe tomorrow. Marcia
