  1. I just found out that all of our work is fired reduction by default. I also found out that only Soldate 60 and Porcelain are fired to cone 10, everything else is a cone 5 clay but fired to cone 6....I am still confused. I must bother the professor more with the how and why.

If you are in the typical group studio you are going to have two firing temps - 6 & 10 and one bisque temp of 06 or 04. This is set in stone so your instructor stays sane. When you get your own kiln you get to do whatever you want. With time you will learn the pros and cons of firing at different temperatures but in a school setting you just have to set limits.

My nephew took a pottery class at college and he was so upset that he didn't get to use whatever clay and glaze he wanted. I said, listen to the teacher. He doesn't want his kiln or other peoples' work ruined.

Yeah, no outside glazes or clay that makes sense. Our bisque is 06, and we have separate carts for the normal reduction ^6 stuff, and a cart that must have notes on your work if you want to do raku, saggar, ^10, wood fire etc.... would suck of any of those got mixed together! xD
