  1. After weeks of smelling a bad smell in my studio, I found a dead mouse floating in a vase that had contained flowers and still had water. My only other guests are daddy long legs. We co-exist fairly comfortably.
  2. By the time I got to cleaning up and putting lotion on my hands it was too late and the painful cracks already started. So now I buy a box of 100 tight plastic blue gloves from the pharmacy. I can feel through them and they are very snug for throwing etc.. If I have to take a break, I just wash my gloved hands and remove gloves. If they rip, no problem. I just use another. I have no cracking of cuticles when I use these. The box is about $11.
  3. Thank you for posting this. I found that I could understand better without the captions, which were comical in their inaccuracies. Also all the trimming and dust creating activities being done without benefit of dusk masks made me cringe. This is, of course, in addition to totally enjoying this video.

  5. As a follow-up to the problem with my hardened zinc: I put about 6 very lumpy cups of the zinc oxide in a heavy previously fired pot . I heated it to 700 degrees and held for 20 mins. After cooling enough to open, I found that the lumps broke up, but was not fine enough to mix in a glaze. It would never pass through the 800 mesh sieve. I tried sifting out the finest particles, but realized that I would never get the 2000 or so grams I would need. I commandeered an old coffee grinder from the kitchen and found that it did the job. It quickly made the zinc into a fine powder.
  6. I have it and have used it many times both on cone 04 and to cone 6. It works great and is very clear.

  8. My 50lbs bag of Zinc Oxide which is about 3/4s full has become hardened. I tried using some in a small glaze mixture by putting it in the blender but it did not work. Is there any way to salvage it?
  9. A mention to Marcia about holding for iron red glazes. The long hold is on the cool down in the 1600 range.
  10. You will not need the ramp-hold feature. I use it to do a slow cool-down to enhance crystallization of glazes from cone 6. Really nice work!
  11. I love to make large platters, 20" or so. It sets off my imagination to design the large flat space. I spend a long delicious time working on one at a time.

  13. To Claylover about the red. In my experience, it is the cooling cycle and the crystallization that occurs then that brings out the red. In my studio, I run a cool down program to do this. I have noticed in some studios where the kiln is in a small room, or multiple kilns are firing, the reds come out great with out a cool down program. I am theorizing that the insulation slows the cooling down. Aside from firing conditions, Claypple is probably on to something in calibration differences.
  14. Let us know what Bailey says please. I have a Bailey and I always lead with about 5 inches of canvas and grab it with one hand as it is coming out and pull until clay is across the small gap from the rollers to avoid canvas getting caught. I have a feeling it has to do with humidity though, because sometimes it just rolls through with no problem.
  15. Jeremy Randall. His beautiful work is so different. I was lucky enough to take a 3 day workshop with him in the spring, but would love to work for a week with him as he is so efficient in his methods and has a lot to offer.

I take awhile to load the bisque, what with different heights and such, so, in order to take (much) less time to fit pots in the glaze firing, I now take a picture of each layer of loaded bisque with my phone, so I can load the glaze the same way (only not touching of course). I'm using a top loading kiln. The big, whole-shelf platters go on the bottom to make it easier to have them level. At some point I was told to leave everything an inch from the thermocoupler.
  17. I was told many years ago that the pre-made clay from a bag had to be wedged before using. This year I took a workshop in which the teacher told us that was bunk. Well I have now thrown from many bags of clay without wedging, with no problems at all.
  18. This spring one of my newest ceramic idols, Jeremy Randall, gave a workshop. I was so happy to learn how to do his smooth terra sig surfaces and slab throwing technique. The man can throw a HUGE slab with nary a fingerprint on it. I'd love to take a workshop from Jennifer McCurdey too, like Celia UK.
  19. Hi Joel, I'm like "clay lover" and leave it full (Shimpo) with the rubber covers that come with. Just wanted to add one tip. I do scrape down the square hopper at end of use for the day and found that a 4" plastic paint scraper fits perfectly. (In case you use Porcelain, you can't leave it in an aluminum pug mill for any length of time.) Karen
  20. Forgive me if you already know this, but I was instructed, when I got my slab roller, to soak the canvas (and dry it) before using to soften it up. That prevents it from forming permanent wrinkles if it should fold while rolling. Yes, your pug is adorable!
  21. I bought a Shimpo 4 years ago and it serves me well with my stoneware clay. The handle to pull down on came facing where the clay came out. I found that having it placed in that direction did not have the best leverage, so I just easily unbolted it, rotated it and reattached so it faces the side. I am thinking about purchasing an extrusion dye that attaches easily for coils. When it was delivered, I had to hire a big strong man to pick it up (even unassembled) off the floor and put on my reinforced table. I was 51 at the time, and you may have a stronger physique.
  22. After 30+ years of potting, I inherited a few thousand. I bought a Bailey slab roller and a Shimpo pug mill. I pug the clay and cut it when it is the length of the slab rollers width. Place the long clay on the slab roller and pat down the side and roll. So much faster than doing by hand. Random info: Had to hire a big guy to lift the pugmill onto my table as it's so heavy, even in pieces.
