AWPottery
I was wondering if you could do horsehair raku and a raku glaze on the same pot? For example have like on the rim of a pot a raku glaze and maybe a glaze on the bottom and then on the main body of the piece put terra sig for the horsehair? Can this be done? Marcia Selsor
raku glazes melt about ^06 or 1850 degrees F and horse hair is applied on a TS pot pulled from the kiln at 11-1200 degrees F. You could try leaving the pot in to kiln tip the temperature drops to 1200 or so and pull it out and apply the horse. You would need to skip the post firing reduction of the raku glaze , so you would end up with copper blues or greens depending on what you are using for glaze. It could be quite lovely. grajewski
You can lift the piece from the kiln when the glaze melts - have help from someone to do it - and throw the horse hair on the pot - it will burn and leave a trail.
Up in Smoke Pottery
Depending on your raku glaze you are using, I have pulled the raku pieces and reduced them for a few mins under/in cans and them opened them and applied the horsehair and them closed the chamber again. You might need to add a sheet of paper or something to kick start the reduction again. Chad
