So, i am making some cylinders and want to add color to the foots/area that makes contact with the kiln shelf......i have no stilts.....i do have mason stains and some frit 3110 though. my mixture ideas:

1. mason stain and water

2. mason stain and slurry

3. mason stain, frit 3110 and water

4. mason stain, frit 3110, water, and slurry

Paint it on

Any ideas what would be best? Thanks, im rather new to the pottery world!

make the above suggestions (slip/engobe/terra sig, etc) or even an underglaze. they usually don't stick in my experience. Underglaze can be made from equal parts clay, flux, and colorant.

Commercial underglazes work well, too, although some may stick a little bit. I use Speedball brand, and the blue and red are known to melt out a little more than the rest.

I, too, use commercial underglazes which I apply before the bisque firing. If it seems a color sticks, I bisque the pot upside down. Never had one stick during glaze firing--yet. Intend to start using terra sig with color to seal and finish pot bottoms in the future. Thanks to whoever posted that hint ( was it Marcia?), 'cause it was a dandy!
