leather hard clay and slip

Recommended Posts

Anyone have suggestions on adding slip trails to clay that is already leather hard. Also reattaching feet when they come off and clay is already leather hard. Input is appreciated.

Moisten clay so its not leather hard before slip trailing

As far as gluing feet use amaco's SP-mender-glaze covers this best

or Aztex high fire mender-this works at cone 10

You can use magic water to attach leather hard clay parts. Works nice if clay is not drier than leather hard.

A magic water recipe (you can google it to find few more recipes):

1 litter of water

2 teaspoons sodium silicate

1/2 teaspoon soda ash

When a good join is critical or the slip decoration needs to adhere you can re-moisten your whole pot if you have time and patience. You can't do it quickly with swabs of water without compromising the integrity of the pot but if you have a day or two try this.

Place the pot on an elevated surface such as a tile or board then place them on a plastic surface. Wrap a sopping wet towel around the base ... Not touching the pot at all. Put a piece of newspaper on top of the pot and cover the whole thing in two layers of dry cleaning plastic. Leave for a day or two and the rise in humidity will transfer to the pot slowly and evenly. This could be done in a damp box too.
