Burnishing vs. Terra Sigillata

Recommended Posts

In a nutshell- which do you prefer and have had better results with?

Personally I've had the best luck with burnishing leatherhard pieces on the wheel, the shine is very consistent and even. However I know there are some die-hard terra sig fans but I was disappointed with my sig even though it fell between the recommended consistency.

I just did my first batch of horse hair pots with Terra Sig and am a convert. I like the continuity of surface.

With burnishing I would occasionally find a break in the burnished area (of course due to me missing it), but with Terra Sig I found it to be completely smooth and a beautiful white.

Well, one problem is you can only burnish round things on a wheel. Terra sig gives a fabulous satiny finish to any shape. I use terra sig and burnish with a grocery store plastic bag.

Whose recipe for terra sig did you use?

I had 14lbs of OM4 ball clay, 3 gallons of water, and 3 teaspoons of sodium silicate (soda ash)
