clay lover
Just for general info, which do you think is better for the kiln life and for glaze development, a slow rise, 115*/hour, the last ramp to peak temp with 'NO HOLD or Same rise to LOWER peak temp with a 20 minute HOLD Either would give the same cone reading, with adjustment to hold or temp. StefanAndersson
I would Hold for 20 – To give a more even temp distribution and I feel like heavy feldspar glazes develop with time.
clay lover
Would you choose the hold, 20m, over the slow rise to peak, or do both? For which reason? Thaks for input.
neilestrick
Most of the good things that happen in the glaze melt will happen at the very end. There's little reason to fire slowly except for the last 100-200 degrees. The longer it spends at peak temp the better the pots will look. I'd fire fast and do the hold at the end. I used to fire to 6 and hold for 40 minutes to get to 8. Pots looked better than firing all the way up to 8, and my elements lasted longer. Chris Campbell
... don't forget to fire down and control the cooling too ... it makes a huge difference.
