terrim8
A few of us at a shared studio are thinking about building a wood fired kiln. We also want to also use it for salt or soda firings. We have access to some free wood from a mill down the road I thought I'd see what designs people like, pros, cons, etc . Comments, thoughts??? The 300 cubic ft John Thies one looks nice. Chilly
There's a book, available online, called backyard kilns - https://stevemillsmudslinger.weebly.com/backyard-kiln-e-book.html the link to the pdf file is at the bottom of the page, in very pale print. It's a great book, and this is the kiln I was going to build.
neilestrick
There are a lot of factors that go into deciding which type of wood burning kiln to build. It depends on what type of firing effects you're looking for- how much ash, flashing, vapor, etc. Also how long you can fire. If it's just 3 or 4 people, a 3-5 day firing isn't doable. Also how often you want to fire. A big kilns takes a long time to load, and the learning curve for firing it is very slow.
Magnolia Mud Research
Terri, Get in touch with Tony Clennell in eastern Canada. http://smokieclennell.blogspot.com/ . Tony would be a potter to discuss wood kiln design. https://www.instagram.com/tonyclennell/ LT
