Maho Bay Clay Works
kiln had an error26, then I replaced the touch pad and relays but now there is an error 1 and the kiln won't heat up at all. I think it is the harness wires which are corroded , It could possibly be the elements. How do I test them?

Maho Bay Clay Works
Skutt tech support is great. But before I invest in the new elements, does anyone know what the kiln is worth if I decide to sell it as is? It has a new touch pad and new relays but still doesn't work. Maho Bay Clay Works
Thanks Mark C. Its the 2.5" wall. bricks in good condition. kiln looks clean but corroded contacts in controller box. rusty outside metal. about 10 years old. its the KM 1018. It was gifted to the studio as a trade for studio time and use of glazes assuming that it worked ok, but doesn't. Error 26 so I called Skutt tech: replaced touch pad and relays $387.00 . Now getting Error 1. Looks like it will need elements and harness wiring. -another $237. Im paying for the repairs and doing the work . Trying to come up with a fair amount studio time to trade. ($200.?) and a fair amount of time that we will have it to use for our studio.
Mark C.
I would credit 250$- 300$ of studio time in trade. You have any idea where all the corrosion is from? Are you in Florida or Hi?
Maho Bay Clay Works
Thanks for your input! We're in the US Virgin Islands. Official name of our studio is St John VI Pottery Inc. our website is www.potteryinparadise.com. We are located just across the street from Coral Bay and we had 2 major hurricanes last year...so lots of corrosion!
neilestrick
Replacing elements and wires is just something that has to be done occasionally. Just like getting new brakes on your car. To see if all the elements are working, do a ramp/hold firing with 1 segment, rate of 9999 to 1000 degrees. Turn it on and let it run a few minutes. Carefully crack the lid and see if all the elements are glowing. The very top and very bottom element will glow before the middle two. If one doesn't glow, then that element is either broken or the not getting power to it due to bad wires. If a pair of elements are out, then either the relay for that section is out, or bad wires. If all the elements are glowing, that doesn't necessarily mean that they're good, though. They could be worn and not getting hot enough to do the job. The best way to check them is to use a multi-meter to check the element resistance. I believe you can find instructions on how to do that on the Skutt website.
